Instead they have been supplied with a few brief quotations that have satisfied the factional disputes.&quot; The book is Volume 1 in a series titled Understanding the China Puzzle. Byrne also quotes one of Deng Xiaoping&#39;s biographers as saying &quot;The theory of reform and opening that Deng developed several years after Mao&#39;s death, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, did not originate with him.
