Bill Schultz turned down law school, got in a car with his girlfriend—now his wife—and moved to Los Angeles in 1982. There was no backup plan. He was going to make a life in entertainment, even if the route changed along the way.

That willingness to course-correct took him from chasing work as a songwriter and screenwriter to discovering the role that fit him best: producer. A job in Capitol Records’ royalty department led to production-assistant work, and a sudden opening on a low-budget film taught him a lesson that kept paying off—sometimes the way forward is simply to say yes, then learn how to do the job.

While Tab cuts his hair, the four-time Emmy-winning producer explains what a producer actually does, why the best ones tend to be control freaks, and how seeing every dollar and every department on a production helped him understand the entire machine.

From there, the conversation moves through the shows and characters that shaped a generation. Bill talks about helping build Bobby’s World around Howie Mandel’s unmistakable creative voice, supporting the artists behind The Simpsons, and protecting what makes a creator’s idea feel authentic when it passes through a studio.

His career also reaches into G.I. Joe, Transformers, Muppet Babies, Garfield & Friends, King of the Hill, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and decades of creator-driven animation.

Bill and Tab get into persistence, creative ownership, the difference between manufacturing content and staying true to its source, and why audiences can sense when the people making something genuinely believe in it.

This is a conversation about betting on yourself, changing direction without giving up, and building a life in animation one opportunity at a time.

FIND BILL SCHULTZ

IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0776202/

Home Plate Entertainment: https://www.homeplateentertainment.com/

FOLLOW TAB SALSMAN

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tabcutshair/

Splitting Hairs Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/splittinghairspod/

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@tabcutshair/podcasts

Watch, listen, and explore more episodes: https://www.splittinghairspodcast.com/
