E 773 — Startup News Germany, Austria, Switzerland, August 2026: The Concentration Economy
August 2026 confirmed the DACH startup ecosystem as a concentration economy. Germany produced its tenth unicorn of 2026 when Moss hit a one-billion-dollar valuation. HTGF launched its fifth seed fund. Scalable Capital shipped the first pension-reform retail product. By every headline metric, the ecosystem is strong.
But beneath the surface, the H1 deal count fell 11 percent year over year to 354 rounds. Two-thirds of all venture capital flowed to rounds above €50 million. Twenty-seven percent of German startups forwent new hires because of AI, while 16 percent hired additional staff because of it. Cleantech and biotech insolvencies accelerated — Cultimate Foods and Sono Motors entered insolvency proceedings.
In AI infrastructure, Stripe officially announced on August 19 that it had agreed to acquire OpenRouter. NEURA Robotics completed two acquisitions. Lovable raised a $400 million Series C at a $13.3 billion valuation. And Berlin pre-seed funding is down 65 percent since 2022, according to the BACB position paper. Ten unicorns can sound like a rising tide, while much of the market below them faces a tougher funding environment. Nobody counted the deals that did not happen. The concentration economy is reshaping growth partnerships across the DACH startup ecosystem.
