Jamal says one of the biggest issues is keeping usable equipment out of landfills.

A phone traded in for a newer model may still have substantial life remaining. Devices in good condition can be resold, while damaged devices may be repaired or broken down for usable components.

That creates both an environmental and financial opportunity.

But data security is equally important.

For enterprises, carriers and individuals, retired mobile devices may still contain sensitive business information, personal data, photos and credentials.

Elite says it performs certified data wiping and can provide documentation showing that the data has been removed.

That capability extends beyond phones.
