What Makes a Good Christian Leader? | 1 Peter 5:1-2

Our text today is 1 Peter 5:1-2:

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; — 1 Peter 5:1-2

Leadership becomes dangerous the moment we forget whom the people belong to.

For four chapters, Peter has been teaching us how believers stand firm under pressure. Now, as we enter the final chapter of this letter together, he turns toward the elders who care for God's people. A suffering church needed leaders who would protect, nourish, and strengthen them—not leaders who would use them.

Peter could have introduced himself with an impressive list of credentials. Remember, he was an apostle, a member of Jesus' inner circle, a witness of the transfiguration, and the preacher at Pentecost.

Instead, Peter calls himself "a fellow elder."

He does not speak as a celebrity standing above them. He speaks as a shepherd standing with them. Peter has early-church authority, but grace has changed how he holds it.

Then he gives the elders their assignment:

"Shepherd the flock of God that is among you."

Four words are operative here:

The flock of God.

The people did not belong to Peter. They did not belong to the local elders. They did not belong to anyone but God.
