Days before the trip, Xi expelled two of China's top generals, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, for disloyalty to the party. Zhang served as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and ranked among Xi's closest allies. The purges leave the commission with two active members: Xi and the man running his investigations. More than 45 Chinese generals and admirals have gone missing in two years.
