Episode 242: Ren Faire LARPing (Pencil Primer, Part 3)

The Pencil Primer returns with part three: the other end of the pencil. We trace the eraser from stale bread crumbs to Goodyear's vulcanized rubber to Hymen Lipman's well-timed patent sale, then get into ferrules — wartime plastic ones, the Blackwing's famous clip, and why American pencils wear erasers while Japanese and German ones mostly don't. But first: Andy falls down a Carter Family rabbit hole, Johnny finds a forest green ink and an all-black Musgrave Ceres, and Tim awaits Blackwing's new Telecaster pencil.Show Notes & LinksShow notesErasable episode 237: Pencil Primer, Part 1Erasable episode 240: Pencil Primer, Part 2Lost Weekend by Phoebe BridgersTrio by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou HarrisTrio IIThe Johnny Cash ShowThe Carter FamilyCountry Music: A Film by Ken BurnsBirthplace of Country Music MuseumField Notes Explore America: Northern CaliforniaPenco Bullet Ballpoint Pen LightThe Gentlemen (series)The Gentlemen (film)GrantchesterThe Vicar of DibleyThe Art of the Fold by Hedi Kyle and Ulla WarcholAsvine C80Jacques Herbin Vert Forêt inkGeneral's Cedar PointePaper Mate EarthWriteJohn & Paul: A Love Story in Songs by Ian LeslieOasis: Don't Look Back in AngerTiresPilot MetropolitanPilot PlumixDiamine Aurora Borealis inkNahvalur NautilusAgainst Convenience by Gabe BullardEnshittification by Cory DoctorowMusgrave Ceres 909 MidnightMusgrave America250 Ceres 909 Red, White, & Blue SetJustin Ostrander on YouTubeBlackwing Volume 33 1/3Tombow 2558Mitsubishi 9852Blackwing x Fender Butterscotch Blonde Telecaster pencilsBlackwing x Fender Butterscotch Blonde Telecaster notebookBlackwing x Fender Stratocaster pencilsBlackwing Volume 725Edward NairneCharles GoodyearVulcanizationKneaded eraserWill It Blend? iPhoneHymen LipmanThe brief and fascinating history of WWII-era pencil ferrulesBic EvolutionUni-ball AirTombow Mono eraserMitsubishi 9852EWStaedtler NorisTelephone pencils in action — pencils with a tip for dialing rotary phonesSupreme Court gift shop gavel pencilsHemingway Home & Museum storeSprout plantable pencilsFaber-Castell Perfect PencilThe Blackwing pencil: a historyEberhard Faber MongolMiradoGolden BearRichard Best FuturaVenus VelvetCraft Design Technology pencilsCamel pencils and the integrated eraserItoya Helvetica pencilErasable PatreonErasable Podcast Discord inviteYour HostsJohnny  Gamber Pencil Revolution @pencilutionAndy Welfle Woodclinched @awelfleTim Wasem @TimWasem
