The Night the Motel Clerk Found the Key Still in the Lock
It was early autumn in Burnt Fork, Wyoming, at the Desert Sage Motel—a low-slung building of pale pink stucco and flickering neon. I was working the front desk when a man in a gray suit checked in, paid cash, and took room 14. He never came back. The next morning, the key was still in the lock, the room untouched except for a single photograph face-down on the nightstand. I picked it up. It was a polaroid of the same room, taken from the doorway, showing a man in a gray suit lying on the bed with his eyes open. The date on the back was 1974. I looked at the photo again—the man was the same man I'd checked in twelve hours earlier. He hadn't aged a day. I went back to the front desk and called his contact number. It was disconnected. I called the number on the registration card. A woman answered and said, 'He's been dead for thirty years.' I asked her who I'd given a key to. She hung up. I never found out. The key is still in the drawer, and sometimes, late at night, I hear it turn in the lock.
