He Shot a Terrorist. Israel Put Him in Prison. Now He’s Been Pardoned.

<p>Israel put a 19-year-old IDF soldier in prison after he shot a terrorist. Now Israeli President Isaac Herzog has pardoned Elor Azaria, and every Israeli needs to understand why his story still matters.Because this is not just about Elor Azaria. It is about whether IDF soldiers confronting terrorists should fear pulling the trigger because they are worried about military prosecutors, investigations and hostile international headlines. On March 24, 2016, two Arab terrorists attacked IDF soldiers with knives in Hebron. One was killed. The second, Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, was wounded.Sgt. Elor Azaria, a young IDF combat medic, arrived as concerns were being raised that the terrorist might still pose a threat with a bomb on his body. Azaria fired. The incident was filmed, creating an international media firestorm. Azaria was convicted of manslaughter and imprisoned. The message many Israeli soldiers heard was devastating: hesitate and your friends might die; fire and your own country might prosecute you. Then came October 7th.Israel discovered the catastrophic price of decades of containment, hesitation and failed assumptions about our enemies. This debate continues today — from IDF rules of engagement and the military legal establishment to the Force 100/Sde Teiman affair and the battle over rewriting the IDF ethical code. And with Israeli elections approaching, the question is bigger than ever:Will Israel elect leaders who continue the old security establishment worldview or leaders who will back our fighters, untie their hands, defeat our enemies and make victory the goal again?Elor Azaria’s pardon closes one file.Israel still needs to learn the lesson.Protect our soldiers. Protect the Jewish people. Defeat our enemies.
