McDonald eventually joined the United States Organized Crime Strike Force in 1977. He ultimately prosecuted various individuals connected to the Mafia including Carmine Persico, Jimmy Burke and the "Goodfellas" crew and more. He is one of the people credited with flipping Lucchese associate Henry Hill to become a government informant.
