The Ouija Defense | Anthony Brines

In the summer of 2020, three people living together in a house in northeast Spokane pulled out a Ouija board at 3:30 in the morning. Before sunrise, 25-year-old Anthony Brines was dead, stabbed about twenty times in his own bedroom.

This episode we’re doing both sides, like always. We start with the Ouija board, from a Baltimore toy-store novelty to the thing your youth pastor warned you about. Then we get into Zozo, the so-called demon of the board that preys on your insecurities. And then the case itself: a marriage ending, a 19-year-old boyfriend who moved in, a secret plane ticket, a confession that says “building, building,” and a defence lawyer telling a jury his client felt like “something overtook him.”

Was it Zozo? Or was it Ed all along? We give you our verdict, and we want yours.

Most of all, this episode is for Anthony: smart, kind, big laugh, and a man who opened his home to someone he had every reason to resent.
