The USS Roosevelt Encounters: The Navy UFO Wave Before the Nimitz Case

<p>In 2014 and early 2015, Navy aviators assigned to Carrier Air Wing One reported recurring unidentified contacts over Atlantic training ranges off the U.S. East Coast. Many of the encounters occurred while F/A-18 Super Hornet squadrons, including VFA-11, were operating from Naval Air Station Oceana before the USS Theodore Roosevelt deployed in March 2015.</p><p><br></p><p>Former Navy pilots Ryan Graves and Danny Accoin later described unfamiliar radar tracks, attempted intercepts, and contacts that appeared on more than one aircraft system. Graves also relayed a report that an unknown sphere-like object containing a dark cube passed between two Super Hornets flying in close formation. The complete safety report said to have followed has not been publicly released.</p><p><br></p><p>On January 21, 2015, Navy aircraft recorded the infrared videos later called GIMBAL and GOFAST. The Pentagon authenticated and formally released both videos in 2020. AARO now concludes that GOFAST did not show anomalous speed, but has not definitively identified the object. GIMBAL remains publicly listed as unresolved, even though a plausible sensor explanation exists for its apparent rotation.</p><p><br></p><p>This episode follows the records, testimony, videos, and missing data behind a case often linked to the Roosevelt.
