The Dr. Douglas Garland Interview.
Why do we celebrate success until someone we know becomes more successful than us?
Dr. Douglas Garland joins Coach Dini on Vigilantes Radio Live to explore the provocative psychology behind his book, The Tall Poppy Manifesto.
After 37 years practicing orthopedic surgery, serving in medical leadership positions and teaching as a Clinical Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Southern California, Dr. Garland experienced another side of achievement: criticism, professional isolation and attempts to undermine success as his own profile grew.
Those experiences led him to investigate Tall Poppy Syndrome—the tendency to criticize, diminish, isolate, ridicule or sabotage individuals who stand out through achievement.
The conversation explores envy, fear of success, imposter syndrome, backhanded compliments, criticism disguised as concern, workplace competition, social media hostility and why talented people sometimes unconsciously make themselves smaller to remain accepted by the people around them.
Dr. Garland also turns the lens toward those doing the cutting.
What does somebody else’s achievement activate inside us? And can envy become motivation rather than resentment?
Ultimately, The Tall Poppy Manifesto presents a challenging proposition:
Maybe being criticized for standing tall isn’t always evidence that you should shrink.
Sometimes it’s evidence that you’ve grown.
