At 55, Sex and the City Looks Different

<p>When <em>Sex and the City</em> premiered in 1998, I was 27 years old with a three-year-old and a six-month-old. My life looked absolutely nothing like Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha&#39;s—and yet, I was completely obsessed.</p><p><br></p><p>I was living vicariously through four women in New York who were dating, working, talking about relationships, wearing fabulous clothes and trying to figure out who they were.</p><p><br></p><p>Now I&#39;m 55, and I&#39;ve found myself thinking about those women—and especially Charlotte—in a completely different way.</p><p><br></p><p>Kristin Davis&#39;s <em>Are You a Charlotte?</em> podcast sent me down a little <em>Sex and the City</em> rabbit hole, and it got me thinking about something much bigger than a television show:</p><p><strong>Who did we think we were going to become?</strong></p><p><br></p><p>So many of us grew up with a picture in our heads of what a happy, successful woman&#39;s life was supposed to look like. Marriage. Family. Career. The beautiful house. The right clothes. The right choices. The right version of ourselves.</p><p><br></p><p>And then life happened.</p><p><br></p><p>We changed.</p><p><br></p><p>Our priorities changed.</p><p><br></p><p>Some dreams came true. Some didn&#39;t. Some turned out not to be our dreams at all.</p><p><br></p><p>And somewhere around midlife, we finally get to ask:</p><p><strong>“Wait… do I even want that anymore?”</strong></p><p><br></p><p>In this episode, I&#39;m talking about <em>Sex and the City</em>, Charlotte York, being a young Gen X mom in 1998, living vicariously through women whose lives looked nothing like mine, and what happens when you reach 55 and realize you don&#39;t need to become the woman you once imagined.</p><p><br></p><p>Maybe you get to become the woman you actually are.</p><p><br></p><p>So tell me…</p><p><strong>Were you a Charlotte, Carrie, Miranda or Samantha?
