A ghost city of 300,000 empty homes, 200 mosques, and somewhere between 2,000 and 5,000 armed insurgents who had spent six months turning every alley, rooftop, and doorway into a killing ground.

Operation Phantom Fury — known in Arabic as Al-Fajr, "The Dawn" — was the largest urban assault conducted by American forces since Vietnam. The Marines, soldiers, sailors, and Special Operations forces who crossed into Fallujah on November 7, 2004 knew exactly what they were walking into.

They walked in anyway.

In Part 1 of this two-part episode, we take you inside the battle — from Fallujah's ancient history as the City of Mosques, through the insurgency that transformed it into the most dangerous city on earth, to the units and the men who fought there. We cover the infamous engagements — Hell House, the Jolan District push, Sniper Alleys, the tunnel networks — and the promise that commanders made to their Marines before the assault began:

"If you get cut off — hold. We will come for you."

And then, on the 229th birthday of the United States Marine Corps, that promise was put to the test.

A young lance corporal became separated from his squad inside the Jolan District. Alone, surrounded, and under fire, he keyed his radio and said four words:

"I'm in a house. I'm alone."
