E24: Micromanagment Isn’t Always the Real Problem

E24: Micromanagment Isn’t Always the Real Problem5 Sept41 min

Micromanagement gets blamed for a lot of workplace frustration, but sometimes it isn’t the real problem.

In this episode, Trey and Allie unpack a listener’s experience with a manager who tightly controls schedules, office coverage, and day-to-day decisions. From there, they look at what often sits underneath micromanagement: lack of trust, unclear expectations, poor performance, insecurity, stress, and managers who struggle to let go of the work that made them successful in the first place.

They also make the case that not every close check-in is micromanagement. New employees, struggling performers, and high-stakes situations sometimes need more oversight. The problem comes when that level of control becomes the default for everyone.

They discuss how leaders can give people more autonomy without giving up accountability, why excessive control eventually kills initiative, and what employees can do when they find themselves working for a micromanager.

If you lead people, work for someone who wants a hand in everything, or are wondering whether you might be holding on a little too tightly yourself, this episode gives you a practical way to think about trust, control, and when to get out of the weeds.
