Fia Sylvan (she/her) - Author "Like a Redwood Seed, Stronger Than the Flames" Proves Impossible Odds Can Be Overcome

Fia Sylvan writes under a pen name for a reason: protection, both for her and for the people whose lives are woven into her story. Fia is Latin, rooted in Sophia, meaning wisdom. Sylvan means of the woods. She chose both words on purpose.

Fia is a new author, a healthcare professional, an animal rescuer, and a gardener who grows food alongside urban habitat on her small city lot. Her memoir, Like a Redwood Seed, Stronger Than the Flames, took over 20 years to write, not because the words were hard to find, but because some of the memories were too heavy to sit with long enough to put on the page. It covers 25 homes, 8 states, abuse, fundamentalism, homelessness, and a life that also included training Iditarod sled dogs, fighting wildfires, and working construction.

In this conversation, Fia and Amber talk about what it means to hold both an ordinary life and an extraordinary one you survived, why black-and-white thinking fails the people caught inside broken systems, and why she chose the word "stubborn" over "resilient."

Fia has already heard from a total stranger who tracked down her email just to say the book made her feel less alone. That is the whole point: proof that overcoming impossible odds is possible, and that you are not the only one who has lived through something like this.
