The First 72 Hours After an Engineered Bioweapon Escapes
An invisible biological hazard can begin with an ordinary shift, an uncertain alert, and no symptoms at all. This episode follows a present-day illustrative scenario in which a mail-processing worker learns that material handled at work may contain an unidentified engineered biological agent while public-health teams are still defining the exposure area.
The story follows the documented 2001 anthrax letter attacks through Washington, D.C.’s Brentwood mail facility, where a contaminated letter passed through sorter 17 before its danger was recognized. Four Brentwood workers developed inhalational anthrax, and two died. The investigation showed why a sealed item, a limited early test result, or feeling well for several days cannot settle an exposure question by themselves.
As the modern exposure map changes, Ava must document her work locations, follow conditional public-health instructions, arrange care and transportation for her brother Daniel, protect her child and service animal plan, and decide what to do when an initial boundary expands. The central question is simple: when credible exposure information changes, do you change your actions with it?
This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Episodes are editorially reviewed before publication.
