Rest Isn't the Opposite of Productivity (stress management tips & burnout recovery for us busy-busy humans) (encore) [281]
We're constantly swamped by messages like rest or idleness leads to laziness or that if you rest, then you'll fall behind — it's been repeated by so many self-proclaimed gurus, business experts, and biohacking influencers that we've started to believe the false messaging. The truth is that you're wired to take purposeful action, to have a healthy store of motivation, and to rest so that you can do those things when needed.
So, how come so many of us feel stuck in the swing between pathological productivity and then guilt when resting? We'll dig into the concept of idleness aversion — the deeply human tendency to detest doing nothing — and explains its evolutionary roots. We are wired to assess whether action is needed and to feel motivated when it is. That's not a flaw. The flaw is when that drive gets hijacked by external messaging that equates busyness with moral virtue and rest with weakness. Henry brings the neuroscience of mind-wandering: when the mind is allowed to wander, there's a kind of syncing up and rest that can happen, almost like rebooting a computer or closing all the apps on your phone. Far from being a waste, it's the precondition for efficient activation when you actually need it.
We'll get into some practical strategies to help you embrace more rest. For example, get a hobby that cannot be turned into a side hustle. Find a third place where people aren't doing anything productive. Let yourself daydream with a timer.

Note: This is an encore episode, originally aired during Joy Lab's Element of Fun. It's replaying here during the month of Re-Creation because rest and play go hand in hand — and if part of you felt a flicker of guilt pressing play on a podcast instead of doing something "productive," this episode is exactly what you need to hear. Preferably in a hammock. Not because you deserve it, but because you need it.
