Trump's DOJ Just Made Law School Admissions A Federal Case

On August 6th, 2026, the Justice Department told Duke Law that the median LSAT of the white and Asian applicants it rejected was higher than the median of the Black applicants it admitted. 34 days later it sent Berkeley Law a letter like it. In between, it opened a review of William and Mary's law school scholarships. I read the letters, the internal Duke emails they quote, and each school's answer, which I give you in full.

Whoever wins, these letters change what admissions committees lean on this cycle, in a year with more high scorers applying than last year's. The Duke letter also contains a number law schools never publish, the median LSAT of applicants they rejected. Put it next to Duke's own 509 and it changes what "in range" means for your schools.
