They Stopped Asking You Twice. Here's Why.

<p>How to be a better manager usually comes down to something nobody teaches you: closing what you said you&#39;d close.</p><p><br></p><p>Not the big broken promise. You&#39;d remember the big one. It&#39;s the forty small ones — &quot;let me look into that,&quot; &quot;I&#39;ll get you an answer,&quot; &quot;leave it with me&quot; — that you closed in your head and left open in theirs.</p><p><br></p><p>Here&#39;s what it costs. Your team keeps a running list of everything you said you&#39;d do. You don&#39;t. So they wait two weeks, then six, and then they quietly stop asking twice. The next time somebody has an idea, or a problem, or something genuinely broken, a half-second calculation runs behind their eyes — is this worth bringing to him? — and more and more, the answer is no.</p><p><br></p><p>You didn&#39;t lose credibility on the thing you forgot. You lost it on everything your team decided not to bring you afterward. And nobody will ever tell you. The feedback is silence.</p><p><br></p><p>In this episode I walk through THE OPEN LOOP — three moves any manager or team lead can run this week:</p><p><br></p><p>1. COUNT WHAT YOU SAID. Go thirty days back through your sent messages, your one-on-one notes and your calendar, write down every open loop, then ask one person straight: what am I still owing you?</p><p><br></p><p>2. CLOSE IT OUT LOUD — DONE, DATED, OR DEAD. You don&#39;t have to deliver all of it, you have to resolve all of it, and a clean no delivered to someone&#39;s face builds more trust at work than three delivered yeses.</p><p><br></p><p>3. STOP OPENING LOOPS YOU CAN&#39;T CLOSE.
