Kyle Whittingham Forfeiting Western Michigan Hail Mary Game Is On the Table

The intense firestorm surrounding Michigan's narrow 13–12 escape against Western Michigan isn't a matter of a literal forfeit, but it has exploded into an unprecedented institutional war over game results.

The Mid-American Conference (MAC) officially filed formal appeals with the NCAA and the College Football Playoff, demanding that the outcome be flipped and Western Michigan be recognized as the rightful winner. At the heart of the dispute is the controversial final sequence where replay officials put one second back on the clock, allowing Bryce Underwood and the Wolverines to pull off a game-winning Hail Mary.

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher blasted the Big Ten officiating crew, pointing out that they violated established replay protocol by relying on an internal, embedded clock feed within their replay system rather than the official stadium and broadcast program feeds. Multiple broadcast angles showed zeroes on the clock when Western Michigan's defender touched the ball on the penultimate play. Steinbrecher argued that if proper protocol had been followed, no extra time would have been granted, and the Broncos would have walked out of Ann Arbor with a 12–7 victory.

Despite the mounting pressure and public outcry, the NCAA shut down hopes of an actual scoreboard reversal, stating that its rulebook contains no mechanism for overturning the final score of a completed game, and that the FBS Oversight Committee lacks the authority to change it. The Big Ten has doubled down in defense of its crew's operational process, leaving the result officially in the books as a Michigan win.
