WCW Halloween Havoc 1989 Review: Flair, Sting, Funk, Muta & Absolute Chaos

Professor Degree and Blade Daily welcome Books and Bodyslams for a trip back to WCW Halloween Havoc 1989 — a show Books has never seen from an era of WCW she’s never experienced.

And what an introduction.

Ric Flair & Sting battle Terry Funk & The Great Muta inside the ridiculous Thunderdome with Bruno Sammartino as special guest referee. The Steiner Brothers meet Doom for the first time. The Road Warriors collide with the Skyscrapers. A young Brian Pillman challenges Lex Luger. The Dynamic Dudes arrive to the delight of absolutely no one.

There’s also The Cuban Assassin on PPV, babyface Midnight Express, an extremely Philadelphia crowd and Tommy Rich’s deeply unfortunate choice of ring gear.

Is Halloween Havoc ’89 actually good?

Well…yes. Ish. Sometimes.

We break down the entire card, the matches that still hold up, the wonderfully strange world of late-’80s WCW and what Books thinks of seeing it all for the first time.
