What happens when the mission changes?

You adapt.

In this episode of REAL RESILIENCE TALK, Cam sits down with veteran Vinny Lombardi for an honest conversation about resilience, military service, mentorship, mental health, purpose, and what it means to continue evolving through every chapter of life.

You can follow and learn more from Vinny via vinnylombardi.com

&

on instagram @r.vinnylombardi

For Vinny, resilience isn't simply about being tough or forcing your way through adversity.

Resilience is the ability to adapt and remain capable in whatever situation life puts you in.

Drawing from difficult experiences in childhood, military service, leadership, transition, and life after the uniform, Vinny shares how his understanding of resilience has changed over time.

Cam and Vinny challenge the idea that resilience means endlessly "pushing through." Sometimes strength means adjusting the plan, asking for help, finding a healthier outlet, going to therapy, or admitting that what worked for you ten years ago doesn't work anymore.

As Cam puts it, if your only strategy is the Rocky mentality of taking punch after punch, eventually you're going to end up like Rocky.

Adaptability matters.

THE POWER OF MENTORSHIP

One of the strongest themes throughout the conversation is mentorship.

Neither Cam nor Vinny got where they are alone.

They reflect on the people who provided patience, grace, accountability, guidance, and sometimes the hard conversations they needed to hear.

Cam shares:

"I am the product of patience and grace…and people guiding me and checking me."

That same responsibility eventually comes full circle. We seek mentors when we need direction—and as we grow, we have an opportunity to become that person for somebody else.

PURPOSE AFTER THE UNIFORM

Military service provides something incredibly powerful: mission, identity, belonging, and purpose.

But what happens when the uniform comes off?

Cam and Vinny discuss the challenge many veterans experience when transitioning into civilian life and realizing that retirement doesn't mean your usefulness, service, or purpose has ended.

The mission can change without disappearing.

Purpose can be found through family, mentorship, community, healthy outlets (some call them hobbies), volunteering, leadership, personal growth, and simply helping another human being.

"Go serve. There's a million ways to serve."

Service doesn't require a uniform.

HEALING, THERAPY & SELF-AWARENESS

The conversation also gets real about trauma, mental health, therapy, aging, and vulnerability.

Healing requires work.

Sometimes that work looks like therapy. Sometimes it's reflection, humor, exercise, community, learning something new, or simply becoming more honest with yourself.

Physical resilience changes as we age too. The answer isn't pretending we're still 20 years old.

We adapt.

The same principle of adapting applies mentally and emotionally.

Resilience isn't remaining the same person forever.

It's developing the self-awareness to recognize when something needs to change—and having the courage to change it.

KEEP FINDING THE NEXT MISSION

This conversation is ultimately about continuing to grow.

Your career can change.

Your body can change.

Your circumstances can change.

Your mission can change.

But there can still be purpose on the other side.

Through mentorship, community, therapy, service, vulnerabilit
