RSR576 - Nettie Freed - The Granddaughter of Rock 'n' Roll: Embracing Risks and Authenticity

What risks and rebellions in rock and roll history continue to echo in today's music industry?

My guest today is Nettie Freed, an artist, songwriter, creative director, and studio owner based near Nashville. With roots in a music industry family and decades of experience in L.A. and Nashville, Nettie shares her journey, her studio Spellbound Recorders, and fascinating stories from her family’s legacy.

In this episode, we dive into the rich history of rock and roll through Nettie’s perspective, exploring her grandfather’s role in naming and shaping the culture, crossing racial barriers, and the stories that surround early pioneers like Little Richard and Buddy Holly.

Nettie discusses her musician family background, the influence of studio legends like Niko Bolas and Colin Linden, and the importance of capturing authentic performances in her own studio, which sits on five beautiful acres near Nashville. We get into the spirit of taking risks, the evolution of music discovery - and why sometimes mistakes or accidents lead to the best records. Nettie also reflects on the challenges and rewards of owning a studio, building community, and honoring her family legacy while fostering artists’ freedom to be themselves.

We explore how history, risk-taking, and embracing imperfections shape the most memorable music moments, emphasizing the importance of documentation, community, and staying true to your artistic instincts.
