Cortés's Lost Armada: The Shipwreck That Changed Conquest
While history remembers the siege of Tenochtitlan and the capture of Atahualpa, it often overlooks the chaotic maritime disaster that preceded them. In this episode, we explore the fate of Francisco de Garay’s expedition, specifically the ship Santa Cruz, which wrecked on the Yucatán coast in 1519. Among the survivors were two men whose knowledge would prove invaluable to Hernán Cortés: Geronimo de Aguilar and Gonzalo Guerrero. We trace their divergent paths after being taken captive by the Maya. While Aguiler chose to assimilate into Spanish colonial structures, returning to Europe with stories that fueled further conquest, Guerrero rejected his past entirely. He integrated into the Chontal Maya society, married a local woman, raised children, and ultimately helped defend his new community against subsequent Spanish invasions. This story challenges the monolithic narrative of inevitable indigenous defeat, highlighting the complex choices individuals made when faced with cultural collapse and survival.
