Ricky Gervais - “You can laugh at bad things without being bad people.”

Welcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. He’s also well known for his deliberately provocative style of comedy and his willingness to tackle subjects that many comedians avoid.

He once said:

“You can laugh at bad things without being bad people.”

This quote comes from his 2018 stand-up special Humanity, where Gervais explains his philosophy of comedy and why he believes we should be able to laugh at terrible things.

And there’s an important distinction here.

Laughing at something doesn't necessarily mean you're celebrating it.

We laugh at tragedy. We laugh at our own mistakes. We laugh at awkward situations, uncomfortable truths and sometimes even things that frighten us.

Why?

Because humour can give us a little distance from things that otherwise feel overwhelming.

Think about the times you've been in a difficult situation with friends or family and somebody makes a joke. For a moment, everyone laughs, and somehow the situation becomes a little easier to handle.

That's not necessarily disrespect.

Sometimes it's resilience.

Of course, context matters. A joke can be cruel, and laughing at something can sometimes cause genuine harm. But Gervais's larger point is that the subject of a joke isn't necessarily the target of the joke.

A comedian can make a joke about something terrible without supporting the terrible thing.

And perhaps that's one of the reasons humour has survived throughout human history.

Have you ever said… one day we will look back on this and laugh?

When life gets difficult, sometimes you have two choices:

You can cry…

or you can laugh.

And occasionally, you need to do both.

So here's question:

Is there something in your life that was once painful, but that you can now look back on and laugh about?

Maybe that laughter isn't a sign that it didn't matter.

Maybe it's a sign that you've made it through.

This podcast was recorded in my secret underground layer.
