How to Humble Yourself Before God | 1 Peter 5:5-6

Our text today is 1 Peter 5:5-6:

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you. — 1 Peter 5:5-6

Humility is one of the hardest virtues to examine. Because the moment we become impressed with our own humility, it has already become pride.

For the past couple of days, Peter has been speaking to Christian leaders. He has called them to shepherd God's people and model the life they want others to follow. Now he widens the circle:

"Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another."

Humility is for everyone—everyone in the family of God is called to wear the same garment.

Peter's image suggests something deliberate. Humility is not simply a personality trait we naturally possess. It is something we choose to put on.

Humility is not shyness, weakness, or self-hatred. It does not require you to deny the abilities God gave you or pretend you have nothing valuable to contribute. Humility sees God, ourselves, and others honestly.

God is the Creator. We are the created. Our abilities are gifts and grace given by God.

Peter begins by telling younger believers to be subject to their elders. This does not mean blindly following every leader, remaining silent in the face of sin, or surrendering your Christian conscience. It means developing a teachable spirit that honors godly maturity, welcomes wise correction, and accepts accountability.

We all need believers who love us enough to correct us, encourage us, and call us back to the truth when we begin to drift. Pride resists that kind of relationship.
