October 28th: The Day Iran Breaks the Bond Market
On September 16, the day the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, the speaker of Iran's parliament posted a math equation. It was the formula American central bankers use to set interest rates, with two new terms added, each named after a waterway that Iran and its allies can close. It looked like a joke. One week later, diesel hit $6.53 a gallon, the highest price ever recorded in the United States. The equation was a claim: whoever controls the price of oil controls the price of money in America, from a family's mortgage to the interest on $40 trillion of government debt. Washington has an answer, and it is not cheaper oil. Both sides want crude expensive, for opposite reasons. Only one of them needs it to last. The Fed's next decision is October 28.
