SA seeks trade diversification & Who pays when protests turn violent and businesses are destroyed?

Stephen Grootes speaks to Kaamil Alli, Ministerial Spokesperson for the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, about South Africa’s efforts to diversify its export markets and strengthen domestic industry. The department’s 2025/26 annual report shows industrial investment reached R31 billion against a R10 billion target, while local procurement totalled R86 billion against a target of R50 billion.

In other interviews, Mpumi Tyikwe, CEO of Sasria talks about the economic cost of protests that escalate into violence, following reports of vehicles being torched and foreign-owned shops looted in Soweto and Durban. The damage extends beyond property losses, disrupting trading, threatening jobs, affecting supply chains and placing additional pressure on already vulnerable businesses and communities.
