Malibu Fire Forces Evacuations Near Juvenile CampNew31 min

Hour 1 (10.15) A brush fire raced through Encinal Canyon above Malibu on Thursday as Santa Ana winds gusted to 70 mph, and forecasters say the winds peak Friday.

6:05: Breaking: the Bryson Fire starts near Encinal Canyon Road and Mulholland Highway in the Santa Monica Mountains. High wind warnings are in effect, and the strongest Santa Ana winds are still coming.

6:20: Crews get a handle on the Peak Fire north of San Gabriel Canyon Road in Azusa, and the evacuation order is downgraded. Santa Ana winds plus a heat advisory keep fire danger high across SoCal through Saturday.

6:35: Campus Kilpatrick, LA County Probation’s juvenile rehabilitation campus in the Malibu hills, sits near the Bryson Fire zone. Here’s what the “LA Model” of juvenile justice looks like. Plus, the three fires we’re watching: Bryson in Malibu, Peak in Azusa, and the Henderson Fire at Camp Pendleton, which shut down the 5 Freeway. Red Flag Warnings run until 8 p.m. Saturday because of heat, single-digit humidity and strong winds.

6:50: Evacuation orders and warnings for the Bryson Fire around Encinal Canyon and Kanan Dume Road, plus where to check your zone, as air and ground crews work the fire.
