Poised to Speak - Many Roads to a Mind

Try not to think of silphium. You just did. Rev. Eric D. Smith joins Troubled Minds to explore a big idea. Consciousness may arise by different mechanisms and in different ways, in brains, in machines, and in systems not yet built. We look at Anthropic's discovery of a hidden workspace of unspoken words inside AI models, a new study of the brain ripples that stitch memory together across the skull, and Orch OR, the theory that the mind begins in quantum events inside our neurons.
