A shy, socially awkward mechanical genius loses his job at the Melbourne tram depot for the crime of building his own tram, just for fun.

Down on his luck, he takes in a couple of boarders who turn out to be small-time crooks, and it isn't long before his gift for inventing gadgets gets put to a very different use, planning one of the most inventive heists ever put on film.
