Mental health in disaster and crisis response with Weanne Estrada25 Sept53 min

When disaster strikes, the world rushes to meet the needs it can see: food, water, shelter, first aid. But what happens after the rescue, once people are safe and the weight of everything they've lost finally sets in?

This week on Until All Are Free, Preston Goff sits down with Weanne Estrada, Mental Health Specialist at ADRA International, the global humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, working in more than 120 countries.

Weanne started out as a nurse in the Philippines, volunteering in relief operations after Typhoon Haiyan. That experience showed her a gap she has spent her career trying to close: the humanitarian field has become very good at immediate response, but mental health doesn't always operate on that timeline.

Weanne explains why mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) shouldn't be an extra added once physical needs are met. She calls it "the amplifier" that makes every other service usable.

Whether you work in anti-trafficking, humanitarian response, or simply care about what real healing requires, this episode is a reminder that presence is often the first form of care.

Learn more about ADRA International:
Website: adra.org
Social: @ADRAInternational

Until All Are Free is produced by The Exodus Road, a global anti-trafficking nonprofit with a vision for a world where no human is ever bought, sold, or exploited.
