<p>In this episode, I am in conversation with political scientist Aysem Mert to discuss the work of philosopher Ivan Illich. He offers radical criticism on institutions and demonstrates that modern systems—such as education and  healthcare, designed to help people could end up having the opposite effect if they are based on growth.</p><p>Over the first weekend of September 2026, local gatherings around dinner tables, picnic blankets and other convivial spaces across the world will mark what would have been the 100th birthday of Ivan Illich, the philosopher of the sacred and the convivial.
