The Dr. Kanchanamala Ranasinghe aka Kanchi Interview.
What happens when the doctor searching for ways to help people and the artist searching for ways to move people are the same person?
On this episode of Vigilantes Radio Live, Coach Dini sits down with Sri Lankan-born, Australia-based physician and multidisciplinary artist Dr. Kanchanamala “Kanchi” Ranasinghe for a conversation about medicine, music, cultural identity, creativity, and the human desire for peace.
Kanchi grew up surrounded by theatre, later pursued medicine, studied sitar and Northern Indian Hindustani music, and eventually built an artistic career spanning singing, songwriting, composition, acting, filmmaking, music direction, and production. Her work has earned international recognition, but her newest single, “Heal This World,” points toward something larger than awards.
Inspired during a train journey through Japan, the song grew from a question about what might happen if people shared more love, kindness, happiness, and humanity with each other.
Coach Dini explores what Kanchi learned from her remarkable artistic upbringing, why she returned to formal music study after establishing herself as a medical specialist, how medicine influenced the way she listens to people, the responsibility that comes with using the word “healing,” and whether changing the world first requires changing what we’re contributing to it.
They also explore her multicultural identity, upcoming film work, the difference between recognition and purpose, and what remains when professional titles disappear.
“Heal This World” is available now on YouTube.
This is a conversation about what happens when science studies the human being while art continues searching for the humanity inside us.
